Squid Game Review – Social Horror with High Stakes

A surreal, glowing scene with figures walking towards a bright light in a foggy landscape, similar to Squid Game.

A Global Sensation

Squid Game isn’t just a show—it’s a global phenomenon. When it first came out, I didn’t jump on the hype train right away. It was actually my daughter who convinced me to watch it. She saw it first, thought it was phenomenal, and insisted I check it out. She’s the reason I got into K-dramas in the first place!

When Season 2 finally arrived, it was well worth the wait. The excitement, tension, and return of familiar faces made it a must-watch.

Why Squid Game Became a Global Hit

A lot of people relate to the struggles portrayed in Squid Game. The show isn’t just about a deadly game—it highlights real-life financial struggles, desperation, and the extreme lengths people will go to for a second chance.

Here’s what made it stand out:

  • The concept – A survival game where 456 desperate contestants risk their lives for a massive cash prize.
  • The deeper themesEconomic hardship, human nature, and the brutal consequences of desperation.
  • The balance of brutality and emotion – It’s not just about the games; it’s about the people playing them.

Standout Characters & Performances

🔥 Lee Jung-Jae as Gi-hun (456) – His journey from a struggling gambler to a survivor was emotionally gripping.

💔 Park Hae-Soo as Sang-woo (218) – A character who made ruthless, heartbreaking choices.

🚔 Wi Ha-Joon as the Cop – His storyline left us with a lot of questions in Season 1, and while Season 2 answered some, it left room for more.

🎭 Gong Yoo’s Cameo – The recruiter who literally slaps people into life-altering decisions. An iconic performance in just a few minutes of screen time.

T.O.P. as Thanos – An unexpected but fantastic addition to Season 2. His character was intense, intimidating, and even humorous at times. It’s great to see him back in action, bringing a new energy to the show.

🎭 Lee Byung-Hun as The Front Man – One of the most compelling and enigmatic figures in the series. His dual role as both the masked leader of the games and a former winner adds layers of mystery and betrayal. His calculated demeanor and shocking connection to the game’s history make him one of the most chilling antagonists in the show.

Did Season 2 Live Up to the Hype?

Absolutely! I loved that they didn’t cram the entire game into one season like they did in Season 1. Instead, they took the time to explore the new characters and build the tension.

What worked? New characters, new games, and deeper emotional stakes.
What didn’t? Too soon to say if any major questions remain unanswered.
🎯 Did it set up Season 3 well? Without a doubt! I can’t wait to see how it all ends.

The Legacy of Squid Game

  • It changed the game for Netflix, K-dramas, and the global entertainment industry.
  • The fanbase is massive, and its impact on pop culture is undeniable.
  • The big question: Will Season 3 be as strong as the first two?

Final Thoughts: Does Squid Game Still Hold Up?

Absolutely. It’s just as intense and emotional on a rewatch.
Would I watch it again? Of course.
Would I recommend it to someone who hasn’t seen it yet? 100% yes.
